How to Authenticate a Gucci Indy

Save

Many of the world’s most fashionable women stroll the streets of Milan and Paris holding a Gucci Indy, a round-corner hobo-style handbag from the famed leather goods house featuring a top handle, detachable shoulder strap and two decorative tassels. You love the style, but unfortunately don’t have the money to walk into a Gucci showroom and purchase a bag off the floor. Before purchasing a Gucci Indy from a private seller, you should be able to identify the real thing.

  • Compare the bag to images of authentic Indy bags. Compare the finishes and specifications. The Indy bag comes in black leather, suede, green crocodile, python, fur, logo fabric and metallic leather, among other finishes. The tassels have bamboo bead details. The standard bag is 18.5 inches long. There is also a smaller, Mini-Indy.

  • Evaluate the general quality of the bag. Look for other signs the handbag is fake, such as uneven stitching and lesser-quality, lightweight hardware. Gucci only uses the finest leather and material to create their bags. If the leather or liner feels cheap or is poorly constructed, the handbag is probably a fake.

  • Take the Gucci Indy to a local Gucci store or another retailer in your area that carries the brand, such as Bloomingdales or Neiman Marcus. Ask the salesperson to look over the bag for the tell-tale signs of a fake.

  • Inquire if the seller has the original receipt and/or authentication booklet. All handbags sold through Gucci come with a small, glossy golden or brown-colored booklet with the words “Gucci” etched on the cover. If the seller is unable or unwilling to produce either, consider walking away.

  • Look for a serial number on the inside of the bag. All Gucci bags are embossed with a serial number for authentication purposes. If the serial number is missing, this is a clear sign the Indy isn’t authentic. If there is a serial number, it should be embossed on a leather flap inside the purse. If the serial number is stamped on the leather, it’s fake.

  • Contact a private authenticator. There are many companies that authenticate the Gucci Indy in person at their offices. Another option is either sending the private authenticator photos of the Indy, or the company may ask you to send them the handbag to authenticate it in person. There are private authenticators in larger cities. If you live in a smaller area, consider searching the Internet for a reputable web-based service.
