Things You'll Need

  • Drain pan

  • Wrench set

Massey-Ferguson manufactured the 135 tractor from 1964 through 1975. When equipped with the three-cylinder Perkins diesel engine, owners could expect years of trouble-free service. Although conventional tune-ups are not necessary on a diesel engine, regular maintenance of the fuel filters is critical for the proper operation of the injection system. Once both of the fuel filters have been changed, it is likely that air has entered the fuel system, requiring the filters and the fuel system be bled before the engine will run properly.

Step 1

Twist the valve on the fuel petcock located at the bottom of the fuel tank in a clockwise direction to shut off the fuel supply to the engine.

Step 2

Place a drain pan under the fuel filters on the left side of the engine. Loosen the thumb nuts on the bleed screws on the bottoms of both the fuel filter housings and allow the fuel in the housings to drain into the pan.

Step 3

Open the fuel petcock until fuel fills the fuel filter housings. Move the lever on the side of the fuel pump mounted to the engine block back and forth by hand until fuel begins to leak out of the bottoms of the fuel filter housings. Tighten the bleed screws on both the filter housings by hand.

Step 4

Loosen the bleed screw on the lower side of the fuel injector pump mounted on the engine block with a wrench. Move the lever on the side of the fuel pump back and forth by hand until fuel begins to come out of the bleed screw. Tighten the screw with the wrench.

Step 5

Loosen the bleed screw on the upper side of the fuel injector pump with a wrench. Move the lever on the side of the fuel pump block back and forth by hand until fuel begins to come out of the bleed screw. Tighten the screw with the wrench.

Step 6

Loosen the fuel line on the fuel injector on the cylinder that is closest to the firewall with a wrench. Turn the engine over with the starter under the engine starts. Tighten the fuel injector line once fuel starts to seep out.

Tip

If you wish to change the fuel filters as part of this procedure, twist off the bottoms of the fuel filter housings in a counterclockwise direction once the fuel has drained from each into a drain pan. Remove the filters from the bottom of the housings. Replace the O-rings on the fuel filter housing bottoms before installing the new filters. Loosen the bleed screws on the filter housings. Continue with the procedure to finish bleeding the fuel system.
