How to Install Hero RUU Using a Mac

HTC Hero RUU (ROM Upgrade Utility) upgrade files are always executable files. These updates are easy to install on a Windows machine; however, executable files are not recognized on the Mac, which makes installing Hero RUU on a Mac much more difficult. You must first extract the file, copy it to an SD card, and then apply it to update the HTC Hero. Fortunately, tools are available to assist you with the task of installing Hero RUU updates on your Mac.

  • Launch your Web browser and navigate to the website (link in Resources) to download the ExtractROM tool.

  • Save the TAR file on your hard drive.

  • Open the "Applications" menu, select "Utilities" and click "Terminal" to start the Terminal utility.

  • Type "tar -xzf path/to/file" and replace "path/to/file" with the path to the TAR file. Press "Enter" to extract the contents of the TAR archive in the same folder.

  • Type "./extractrom path/to/RUU/executable" and replace "path/to/RUU/executable" with the path to the RUU executable. Press “Enter.” This will extract the file in the same folder.

  • Connect the HTC Hero to your Mac and use the Finder to copy the file to the root of the SD card. The file must not be placed inside any folder.

  • Navigate to the Android Market on your HTC Hero to install the ROM Manager app (link in Resources).

  • Tap the “Install” button to install the app.

  • Tap the "ROM Manager" icon in the Applications menu to launch the app.

  • Tap "Install ROM from SD Card." Select the file and confirm the installation.

  • Wait until the RUU ROM is installed and the HTC Hero reboots.
