How to Make Game Icons Using Gamemaker

Published by YoYo Games for both the Windows and Macintosh operating systems, GameMaker software is designed with both novices and experienced computer game programmers in mind. Employing an automatic scripting language, GameMaker gives players of all skill levels the ability to tailor games to their personal taste. GameMaker also incorporates an icon creation tool that provides gamers the ability to create or modify playing pieces with a few clicks of a mouse.

Things You'll Need

  • GameMaker Software
  • Computer
  • Open the GameMaker software program on your computer.

  • Click on the “Icon Maker” tab on the GameMaker toolbar. Select the “Icon_Maker.exe” file from the drop-down file menu with your mouse.

  • Click on any spot on the pop-up grid. Drag the cursor with the mouse to draw the desired shape of the game icon.

  • Select the icon, or area of the icon, you wish to color by clicking on each individual box inside the icon with the mouse while hiding down the “Control” key on the keyboard. Release the mouse button and control key. Click on the color pallet at the bottom of the grid with the mouse to choose the desired color for the icon.

  • Open the “File” menu and click on “Export Icon” with the mouse. Select “My Computer” from the pop-up screen and then select “Global Game Settings” from the menu on the left side of the screen.

  • Select the “Loading” tab on the menu at the top of the screen. Click on the “Change Icon” button and the desktop menu will open.

  • Click on the icon file with the mouse. Assign the new icon a name and then click the “Okay” button to save the new icon.
