How to Create an Online Scrapbook Using Instagram and Pinterest
Documenting life events used to mean pasting ticket stubs, photos and tidbits into an album. Today, the digital equivalents -- Instagram and Pinterest -- are a glue-less way to tell your story, whether it’s about living with a favorite pet, traveling around the world or promoting a brand. Add social features, and you’re ready to share your creations instantly with friends, family and colleagues. So whether you prefer Instagram’s fast photo editing and sharing, or Pinterest’s ability to create idea boards, it’s time to start capturing your memories with these free services.

1
Launch the Instagram app on your phone. Click on the “Share” button within the app, which prompts you to take a photo with your phone or select one from your phone’s library. Transform the photo by framing, cropping, brightening or using one of 11 custom filter effects offered by the app.
-
2
Share your pictures with your friends through Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Tumblr, Posterous, Foursquare (if you specify a photo’s location) and email by clicking within the app’s “Share” functionality. This process occurs after you apply a custom filter. Write a description in the “Where,” and add a location to your photo. Select the social networking sites you wish to post the image and set appropriate privacy options.

3
Publish your completed masterpieces to your feed on Instagram so other Instagram users can interact with your images and post “likes” and comments. Your images are automatically posted to your feed once you share them. You can, however, turn off this functionality by setting your photos to “Private” under “Account Settings.”

Go to Pinterest.com, click the “Request an Invite” button, and enter a valid email address. It usually takes about 24 hours to receive the email invite. Pinterest is all about capturing and sharing, but it gives you the unique ability to save or “pin” images, videos and favorite websites to a “virtual inboard.”
-
5
Activate your account by signing up via your Facebook or Twitter accounts. Or, simply create a login with an email and password. If you use one of your social networks, your information will be picked up from these sites, including your image, but you can upload a new profile image, as well. For privacy, hide your profile from search engines. Check the box that allows you to hide your account from search indexes under “Edit Profile” within your account.
-
6
Create your first board by clicking “Add” in the toolbar. Name it, choose a category and click “Create.” Next, install the “Pin It Bookmarklet,” so you can add a pin with just one click. Add more to your board by going back to the “Add” and selecting “Add a Pin” or “Upload a Pin” to choose files from your computer or mobile app. You can also create a new board by scrolling to the bottom of your board list.
-
7
Follow one board belonging to the person you want to add, then change the setting from “Just Me” to “Me+Contributors” under the “Who Can Pin” settings. Type the contributor's name in the text field and click “Add.”
