How to Change Your LinkedIn Notifications

In March 2011, LinkedIn's official blog reported that the service had over 100 million registered users, and was growing at a rate of a million new users per week. With so many professionals using LinkedIn as a means of networking, recruiting and communicating, it is more important than ever to ensure that your LinkedIn notification settings are adjusted to match your needs. Change your LinkedIn notifications directly through the "Accounts and Settings" page of your account, and specify exactly what types of messages and opportunities you want to be notified of.

  • Sign in to your LinkedIn account.

  • Move your mouse cursor over your name and select the "Settings" option from the drop-down menu that appears.

  • Click the "Email Preferences" option, then click the "Select the types of messages you're willing to receive" link.

  • Select the notifications that you would like to receive in the popup window that appears, then click the "Save Changes" button to save the changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also add comments in the "Select the types of messages you're willing to receive" window. According to LinkedIn, these comments may include "advice on your availability, types of projects or opportunities that interest you, and what information you'd like to see included in a request."
  • The Opportunities section of the "Select the types of messages you're willing to receive" window allows you to specify what types of opportunities you would like to be notified of. Only select opportunities that are relevant to your experiences or interests.
  • The Messages section of the "Select the types of messages you're willing to receive" window allows you to specify whether you would like to receive introductions and InMail, or introductions only; LinkedIn recommends that you accept both introductions and InMail notifications. Introductions allow those in your extended network to contact you through people you know in common; InMail lets those not in your network contact you directly about business and work opportunities.
  • If you have a Premium account, the OpenLink option allows other LinkedIn members to send OpenLink messages to you free of charge.
