Ever had a screw go in at a weird angle or bind up part way into the hole? Here's how to avoid those problems.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Clamp the workpiece(s) together.

  2. Step 2

Mark where the screw should go and choose the right screw for the job. (See Related eHows.)

  3. Step 3

Bore a pilot hole slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw. There are special drill bits for countersinking screws in hardwoods, and you should use one of these if appropriate.

  4. Step 4

Lubricate the screw by rubbing a little bit of beeswax on it. Don't use oils because they can stain the wood.

  5. Step 5

Consider putting the screw in at an angle if the workspace is cramped or difficult to get into. Be sure to use a screw that's long enough to accommodate the extra area.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hide countersunk screws with decorative wood buttons made for that purpose.
