How to Fix an Aluminum Fence Gate to Make It Wider
An aluminum fence gate adds a decorative touch to any fence. Since the gate features a metal construction, you typically cannot make the gate larger or smaller without welding together two gates or sawing off parts of the gate. Making a wood frame that fits around the gate is one way to fix the gate and make it larger without welding. The frame serves as the new gate and highlights the original look of the aluminum gate. 1
Remove the gate from the fence by unscrewing each screw in the gate with a screwdriver. The gate should have at least two hinges attached to the fence post. Remove the handle from the opposite end of the gate with your screwdriver. Set all of the hardware in a safe location.

2
Measure the length and height of the gate. Measure the width of your opening or the size that you need the gate to be. Compare the measurements and determine the height needed. Cut two 2-by-4 wood boards to the new length you need with a circular saw and two boards to the same height as the gate.

Set one board flat and apply wood glue to the top of the board. Set the aluminum gate on the board, pressing the gate into the glue. Wipe off any excess glue with a damp cloth. Apply more glue to the top of the fence gate and set a second board on top. Clamp the gate to the boards and let dry overnight.

Remove the clamps from the wood and gate. Insert one of the boards you cut to the height of the gate between the wood boards. Insert a second board on the opposite end of the gate. Place a 2-1/2-inch wood screw through the top board and sink into the side board.

5
Attach two wood screws through the top of the board and into the side piece. Repeat this step with the opposite end of the board. Turn the gate upside down and sink two wood screws through the bottom board and into the sides. Sink two wood screws through the opposite end of the board.

Arrange the original hinges on one end of the new frame and the handle on the opposite end. Attach the hinges and handle with the original hardware and attach the hinges to the fence post. The new frame creates the wider gate that you need.
