How to Turn Off the LED on a Gateway Laptop
Most Gateway laptops have a light-emitting diode to indicate when certain parts are turned on. The battery charge indicator, which uses an LED to show the current status of the battery, stays on by default. To turn it off, simply disconnect the power cord. The power LED, however, is designed to shut off automatically when the laptop is off. Your laptop is asleep or in standby mode if the light remains on or begins flashing. This mode is enabled by default as a quick way to reduce power without shutting everything off.

1
Click "Start." From the Control Panel, select "Hardware and Sound" and click "Change What the Power Buttons Do." Change the drop-down menu for "When I Press the Power Button" to either "Shut Down" or "Hibernate." Choose "Do Nothing" for the "When I Close the Lid" option.

Click "Start" and "Shut Down" whenever you need to turn off the laptop, as an alternative way to turn off your laptop's LED. Now that you've changed the power options, pressing the power button will do the same. Don't click the power button icon located in the Start menu, as it's usually set to standby mode.

Hold down the power button on the laptop for at least 10 seconds for another method to cut off power to the laptop and turn off the LED. This forced power-down is helpful when your computer stops responding and can't be turned off by other methods. Perform this procedure only as a last resort because it causes file corruption, which is usually repairable if you launch the Disk Checker on the hard drive.

Remove the tiny cable that leads from the power button to the motherboard, in a drastic approach. This turns off the LED, but should be done only if you're experienced in PC hardware repair. This method is helpful when you need access to components beneath the keyboard and the ability to power the computer on and off for troubleshooting or repair purposes.

If you do decide to open your laptop, touch a metal object first to ground yourself. Alternatively, wear an anti-static wrist strap throughout the procedure.
