How to Make a Broom Closet Door
A broom closet can fit conveniently in a tight space or between two already existing studs. The narrow size of most broom closets can make it a difficult fit for a traditional-sized door, but you can make your own broom-closet door. Make a door from inexpensive plywood to keep your brooms and cleaning supplies under wraps. A simple slab door can be completed by an individual with only basic DIY skills. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the area you have marked for the doorway. For a flat-panel style of door you should plan for a 1-inch overlap over the sides of the door frame, all the way around. For example if your doorway measures 50 inches long by 12 inches wide, you need to build a door that is 52 inches by 14 inches.

2
Cut the piece of plywood to the specific measurements for your doorway with the circular saw.

3
Round the corners of the door for a more finished look. Trace the pattern for the edges of the door's corners using the curve of a paint or coffee can. Trim along the line with a jig saw.
-
4
Sand the edges of the door until they are smooth to give a more finished look, as well as to prevent splinters.
-
5
Paint or stain the door. Allow it to dry completely.
-
6
Install the hinges on the door by screwing them into place about 2 inches from the top and bottom of the back of the door along the side opposite the side you want it to open on.
-
7
Attach the door to the wall by screwing the hinges to the interior of the doorframe you have already built.

Tips & Warnings
If you want the door to stand out you can stain it or paint it a contrasting color. If you want the door to blend in you should paint it the same color as your wall. The AA-grade plywood offers a smooth surface for staining and painting.
You can make a more complicated cabinet door with inset edges if you want to, but it will take considerably more work. Another option is to purchase a cabinet door in the correct size or you can repurpose old shutters that you find.
