How to Share Resources in SLES Linux

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is a Linux distribution designed to be used as a server for the business market. The distribution is compatible with the SAMBA program which allows servers to communicate with and share resources with other computers connected to the server. If you want to configure your SLES Linux system to share its resources with other computers, you can do so through the "YaST" application.

      Click the "Start" button in the computer's task bar and move your mouse cursor over the "System" option. Select the "YaST" option from the side menu that appears.

      Click the "Network Services" option, followed by the "Network Services (xinetd)" option.

      Click the "swat" service to highlight it. Click the "Toggle Status (On or Off)" button, followed by the "Finish" button.

      Click the "System" option, followed by the "System Services (Runlevel)" option.

      Press and hold the "Ctrl" key and click the "nmb," "smb," "smbfs" and "xinetd" services to highlight them. Click the "Enable" button to enable the services.

      Click the "Network Services" option, followed by the "Samba Server" option.

      Click the "Start-Up" tab and place a checkmark next to the "During Booting" option beneath the "Service Start" heading. Place a checkmark next to the "Open Port in Firewall" option if the option is clickable.

      Click the "Identity" tab and type your workgroup or domain name in the space labeled "Workgroup or Domain Name."

      Select the "NO DC" option from the "Domain Controller" drop-down menu. Type a name for the computer in the space labeled "NetBIOS Hostname" and click the "Finish" button to save the changes.

      Click the "Start" button in the computer's task bar and move your mouse cursor over the "System" option. Select the "YaST2" option from the side menu that appears.

      Click the "Network Services" option, followed by the "Samba Server" option. Click the "Shares" tab, followed by the "Add..." button.

      Type the resource's file path in the space labeled "Share Path." Type the resources name and description in the spaces labeled "Share Name" and "Share Description," respectively.

      Click the "OK" button to share the resource.
