How to Apply a Ceramic Glaze on Cast Iron

Make cast iron more decorative by applying ceramic glaze.

Cast iron is durable and retains heat extremely efficiently. However, cast iron does not have a surface that can be cleaned readily, like ceramic surfaces. Give your cast iron pans and skillets the benefits of both materials by applying ceramic glaze onto the cast iron. Not only will the ceramic glaze be slick and washable, but applying the glaze yourself allows you to hand select the glaze color. This enables you to match your ceramic-covered cast iron with the rest of your kitchen.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrub the cast iron pan or skillet thoroughly using degreasing soap and a metal scrubber. This will remove any food debris, grease or residue. Rinse the pan or skillet thoroughly and dry completely using a towel.

    • 2

Paint an even layer of ceramic glaze onto the inside bottom surface and inside walls of your cast iron pan or skillet using a paintbrush. Allow the glaze to dry for one hour.

    • 3

Paint a second layer of glaze over the first layer. Allow the second layer to dry for four to six more hours.

    • 4

Bake the prepared cast iron pan or skillet in a kiln set to medium heat for six hours. Let the pan or skillet cool for an additional six hours before touching it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Apply different colors of ceramic glaze to create a more artistic-looking cast iron pan, skillet or other object.

  • Never touch a hot kiln while it is firing.

  • Always allow hot cast iron and hot ceramic glaze to cool completely before touching to avoid severe burns.
