How to Use Cubase SE3 with an iMac
Cubase is an affordable, basic audio editing program made by Steinberg that is available for both Mac and PC users. If you have an iMac, it's likely that your computer has the juice needed to run the program, as most newer Macs already meet the minimum requirements set out by Cubase. Still, you'll want to do some checking to make sure you'll be able to easily install and run the program. Once you've determined that you can install it, the way that you set up and run the program is entirely up to you and your particular needs.

1
Check out your iMac to make sure it meets Steinberg's minimum requirements. Click the Apple icon and select About this Mac. From there you'll see the version of Mac OS that you're running, as well as the memory size and the processor speed of your computer. According to the Cubase SE 3 Getting Started guide, you'll need at least Mac OS X 10.3 or 10.4, with at least 384 MB of RAM and a processor that is 1.8 GHz or faster. You'll also need an available USB port and a DVD-ROM drive.

Check to make sure you have the latest audio drivers for the audio hardware you plan to use with Cubase. To do this, locate the website of the manufacturer for your audio hardware—such as your mixer—and then check for update or installation downloads for your hardware's drivers. Download the updates or installations to your computer. Drivers allow your hardware to "talk" to your computer; if you don't have the right drivers installed, you won't be able to use the hardware with Cubase or any other program. Likewise, if you're going to be using any MIDI audio devices, you'll need to update your drivers from the manufacturers' websites before you start using Cubase.

Insert the Cubase SE 3 DVD-ROM into the DVD drive of your computer. This should automatically launch a window that asks if you want to install this software; click "Install" and then follow the prompts to install the software to your computer. Be sure you read and confirm your acceptance of the license agreement during the installation process. When the installation is complete, Cubase should be listed among the applications in your Applications folder.

4
Restart your computer and plug the Steinberg Protection Key—which looks like a small flash drive—into a USB port on your computer. This key stores the licenses for your Cubase program and must be plugged in for Cubase to work on your computer.
-
5
Open Cubase and begin adjusting your audio settings and setting the input and output ports for your particular Cubase setup.
