How to Stream Netflix From OS X With UPnP

You can stream Netflix from your Mac OS X computer using a desktop application that supports the UPnP method. As of January, 2012, there are three UPnP clients that also support streaming of the Netflix Watch Instantly service on a Mac. The three contenders from this category include XBMC, Boxee and Plex.

Instructions

    • 1

Install XBMC (see Resources) to get a home media center on your Mac computer that streams Netflix movies and TV shows. With the "XBMC Flicks" add-on, which you download from within the application, you are able to enable Netflix streaming and get other movie-streaming services like Hulu. The software and add-on are free.

Download the Plex Media Center for OS X (see Resources) to have a UPnP client that can stream Netflix and other online video services, including Hulu, YouTube, Vimeo and many more. The application is a free download from the developer's website. You will have to download the appropriate plug-in from inside the application that lets you watch Netflix on your Mac. The plug-in takes advantage of Microsoft Silverlight technology to stream video.

Use Boxee (see Resources) to have a home media center that streams the Netflix Watch Instantly service and also incorporates UPnP technology. Boxee originally started out as a set-top box but is now available to users to install on many computer platforms, including Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. The software is a free download and requires you download a plug-in inside the application to start streaming movies and TV shows from the Netflix service.
