How to Play a DVD in AirTunes on a MacBook With Speakers
AirTunes is an extension to Apple's ubiquitous iTunes music management system. AirTunes software initiates streaming of DVD-based audio and video information on a home network. At the other end, AppleTV hardware is needed to decode this data, sending it along to your audio/video equipment. Although playing music over the system is straightforward, DVD playback takes a little more thought. ITunes is very particular about the file types it plays, requiring a couple of more steps for full functionality.

1
Download an audio/video program that converts DVD files into a file format that Apple software understands. Commonly-used choices are free programs such as HandBrake, DVD2iTunes, or other varied options.
-
2
Insert your DVD into the MacBook. Convert the files into the MPEG-4 video format and AAC audio. The files are saved on your MacBook's hard drive, accessible through iTunes. Follow the program's on-screen guide for the specific processes.

3
Look on the back of the AppleTV module. Plug the Ethernet cable into the appropriate jack, leading to your router.

4
Locate the HDMI jack on the AppleTV. Slide the HDMI cable into the matching port on the AppleTV module. Connect the included power cord to an AC outlet.

5
Plug the other end of the HDMI cable into a free port on your TV. Alternately, you can get surround sound using one HDMI to your surround receiver, and another between the "HDMI Out" on the receiver and a free input on your television.
-
6
Allow the AppleTV device to find your network. Click on the name of the network address to add the device. Follow the remainder of the on-screen instructions to finish setup.
-
7
Open the iTunes program. Look for the "Movies" option on the right side of your MacBook's screen.
-
8
Turn on the television and receiver. Set each to the proper inputs used by the AppleTV module.
-
9
Locate the name and box art or screenshot of the movie you imported. Click on this to begin playback.
