How to Flash a Rooted Droid to Cricket

Connect your phone to your computer to flash it to Cricket.

When a Droid is "Rooted" it means that the phone has been hacked to allow you permissions to access more of the programming and settings than you can on a phone straight from the factory -- instead of having only guest access to the phone's programming, you have superuser access. This access should help you as you reprogram (or flash) your phone from your current mobile provider to work with the Cricket network. Flashing your rooted Droid phone over to the Cricket mobile network should only require a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Download flashing software to your computer from a reputable online retailer, such as Remote Squad, Your Cellular or Flash to Talk (see links in Resources). The cost of the software varies based on the model of your Droid and your current wireless provider.

    • 2

Call Cricket to create a new account. Give them your phone's identification information, which is located in the battery compartment. Tell them you are planning to use your existing phone instead of purchasing a new one.

    • 3

Connect your Droid to your computer with a USB cable. Open the flashing software on your computer and then follow the software's instructions to complete the flashing process.

    • 4

Turn off your phone and wait at least 30 seconds for it to fully shut down. Turn it back on and then make a test call to make sure it finds Cricket cell towers instead of those from your previous mobile provider.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cricket stores don't flash cellphones, but they have many resellers who do. Call a local cellphone retailer that sells Cricket phones in addition to phones from other wireless providers -- many offer flashing services. The cost will vary based on your Droid model.

  • Remember to back up your data -- including your contacts -- before attempting to reprogram your phone's network.
