Knit a handmade scarf using a loom board.

Hand-knitting a scarf using knitting needles can be complicated; one alternative is to knit a scarf using a knitting loom board. Knitting loom boards are designed to be used on a flat surface and require minimal steps to complete. This allows people with limited crafting skills and dexterity to successfully complete a hand-knit scarf in a short amount of time.

Things You'll Need

  • Knitting loom board, 8 inches long
  • 2 skeins DK weight yarn, 50 grams each
  • Knit hook
  • Crochet hook
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Place the loom board horizontally in front of you. Make a slip knot onto the end of a ball of DK weight yarn, then loop the slip knot over one of the pegs of the loom.

    • 2

Wrap the yarn over and under the pegs along the entire length of the loom board, skipping a peg each time you wrap the yarn.

    • 3

Wrap the yarn back the opposite direction, moving the yarn over and under the pegs that were skipped the first time.

    • 4

Repeat this process a second time, which will create two complete rows of woven yarn.

    • 5

Loop a knitting hook over the wrapped yarn in the first row on the first peg, and pull the loop over the peg and on top of the weaving. Release the loop, which will result in the first loom knitted stitch.

    • 6

Repeat this process to knit all of the first row loops around the entire loom board using the knitting hook.

    • 7

Wrap the yarn over and under the pegs, as before, to create a third row. Knit the wrapped pegs, this time working the second row with the knitting hook. The knitting will eventually flow out of the bottom of the loom board.

    • 8

Repeat the entire process until the knitted scarf is at least 60 inches long.

    • 9

Insert a crochet hook into the first three loops on the first three alternating pegs. Slip the third loop through the first two loops, effectively binding off the first two loops.

    • 10

Repeat this process to bind off all of the loops except the last loop. Knot the last loop onto neighboring stitch to secure it in place. Cut off any excess yarn with scissors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use different colors of yarn to create a multicolored loom board scarf.

  • Keep sharp knitting hooks and scissors out of the reach of children.
