How to Reverse the Rotation of Dayton Attic Fan Motors

Dayton attic fans operate with a drive belt connected to an electric motor that can be run in reverse to change the rotation of the spinning fan blades. This is a useful feature in winter to push hot air downward while reversing the motor, during hot months, lets you force heated air upward and through the roof in the attic vents. Reversing the motor rotation on a Dayton takes only a few minutes to do.

Things You'll Need

• Needle-nose pliers
• Stepladder

Instructions

1. Turn off power to your Dayton attic fan by flipping the circuit breaker at the household breaker panel or removing the fuse.

2. Grip the flat, metal connector on the end of each wire where it attaches to the motor on your Dayton attic fan with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Use a stepladder if necessary. Pull the wired connector off of the terminals on the side of the motor. There are only two wires that must be disconnected.

3. Slide the connector on the end of each wire onto the opposite terminal on the motor.

4. Turn on the electricity at the breaker or fuse box.

• Do not rely on the wall switch to shut off power to your Dayton fan motor. Always cut off electricity at the breaker or fuse panel.
