How to Check the Clutch Fluid on a 2003 Civic

Since it was introduced in 1973, the Honda Civic has paved the way for all other import compact cars. One area that the Civic seemed to always fall behind on was styling, but that all changed when Honda radically changed the Civic's looks in 2006, giving it the futuristic looks needed to complement its high-tech mechanics. The following model year, 2007, Civic came standard with a 140-horsepower, 1.8-liter engine and a five-speed transmission with a hydraulic clutch. Honda recommends checking the clutch fluid level in the 2007 Civic every month.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Civic’s hood and find the clutch master cylinder reservoir, the roughly 4-inch-tall translucent cylinder with a light gray cap, on the driver’s side rear corner of the engine compartment.

    • 2

Wipe the outside of the clutch master cylinder reservoir off with a clean shop cloth to get a more clear view of the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder.

    • 3

Verify that the fluid level is within the “Max” and “Min” marks on the master cylinder reservoir. If the fluid is not within the marks, unscrew the cap from the clutch master cylinder and add new DOT 3 brake fluid to the reservoir until it is between the “Min” and “Max” marks.

Tips & Warnings

  • The hydraulic clutch system is a sealed system and should never use fluid. If the clutch fluid is below the “Min” line, this indicates a problem in the system, including a leak or low friction material on the clutch plate. Have the system analyzed by a professional after refilling it.

  • DOT 3 brake fluid eats away at automotive paint rapidly, so wipe up any spills immediately.
