How to Change the Bitrate on a SHOUTcast Server
SHOUTcast is an Internet radio service that allows you to run your own radio station from the comfort of your home with music placed on your own server. You can stream the songs in whatever bitrate you like. A high bitrate will produce high-quality songs, while a low bitrate will produce progressively lower-quality songs. Though a low bitrate song doesn't sound as good as a higher bitrate song, it has a smaller file size, which reduces your SHOUTcast station's bandwidth usage and saves you money.
Instructions

1
Insert a music CD into your computer’s CD/DVD drive.
-
2
Click “Start” and type “Windows Media Player” into the search field, then press “Enter.” Windows Media Player will open and automatically detect the music CD.
-
-
3
Press and hold the “Alt” key on your keyboard and click the menu bar on Windows Media Player, then release the “Alt” key. A menu will appear. Choose “Tools,” then “Options.”
-
4
Select the “Rip Music” tab. Choose the audio format you use to stream your music from the “Format” drop-down. For example, if you stream your music as MP3 files, choose “MP3.”
-
5
Slide the “Audio Quality” slider located on the bottom of the window. The slider is set to a bitrate of 128kb by default. Moving the slider towards “Smallest Size” decreases the bitrate. The lowest bitrate possible is 48kb. Choose the bitrate you want.
-
6
Click “Apply.”
-
7
Transfer the lower bitrate music to your SHOUTcast server once it is finished being ripped to your computer. Your radio station will now stream lower bitrate audio, saving you bandwidth fees.
