Create a tulle garland using inexpensive craft materials.

Tulle pom-pom garlands transform any room into a decorative wonderland, and are often used as accent decorations for weddings and showers. Construct tulle pom-pom garlands into any size, large or small, that you choose to suit your event's location. For example, create miniature pom-pom garlands to hang up around tables or to wrap around doorways. Create very tiny tulle pom-pom garlands to wrap around glasses or stemware that your guests will enjoy using during the event.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out two 2-inch-wide circles from cardboard using scissors, then cut a smaller 1-inch-wide circle from the center of both shapes using a craft knife. The cardboard circles now resemble doughnuts.

    • 2

Place the two cardboard doughnuts together and line up the edges.

    • 3

Cut a piece of tulle fabric into a strip that measures 1 inch wide and 36 inches long. Select any color of tulle that you prefer.

    • 4

Wrap the tulle strip around the doubled doughnuts, weaving the tulle through the holes and around the outside edges. Continue wrapping all of the tulle around the doubled doughnuts. The tulle will feel thick and will appear rounded around the edges. You essentially will have a tulle "doughnut."

    • 5

Hold the wrapped form vertically and firmly in your hand, then insert scissors into the fabric and in between the two cardboard forms. Cut the tulle all the way around the perimeter of the doughnut forms, snipping with one blade of the scissors between the two cardboard doughnuts, one blade on top of the tulle. The tulle will end up splayed out on either side of the cardboard doughnuts, held around the middle by the "doughnut hole" of the pieces of cardboard.

    • 6

Cut another piece of tulle to measure 1/2 inch wide and 6 inches long. Slip the middle of this strip into the gap between the two cardboard forms, and wrap the new strip of tulle several times around the middle of the tulle that is going through the hole of the doughnut. Tie the new tulle strip tightly into a knot around the middle of the splayed tulle.

    • 7

Slide the cardboard doughnut forms off of the splayed tulle, one going off the snipped ends of the tulle on the right side, one going off the ends of the tulle on the left side. The cardboard will slip off with minimal effort. The tulle will puff out into a pom-pom shape, tied in the middle. Trim off any piece of tulle from the mini pom-pom that are too long, and fluff out the tulle as necessary.

    • 8

Repeat the entire process to create as many mini pom-poms as you want in your garland. Arrange the pom-poms into a line in the order that you prefer.

    • 9

Thread a sewing needle with nylon thread, and knot the end. String the mini tulle pom-poms onto the nylon thread by inserting the needle into the center of each pom-pom.

    • 10

Knot the nylon thread onto the last mini pom-pom in the garland, then trim off any excess thread with scissors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the same color of tulle to create a more uniform-looking garland, or use different colors of tulle for each pom-pom to make a multicolored garland.

  • Keep sharp scissors, the craft knife and sewing needles out of the reach of children.
