How to Cap DSL
You can use software to control and cap the bandwidth usage of your DSL Internet connection. Some of this software includes NetLimiter, SoftPerfect Bandwidth Manager and Traffic Shaper XP. Using a software solution lets you control your Internet connection's bandwidth for a single computer or every computer on a local area network.

1
Get the NetLimiter software from netlimiter.com, designed specifically for Windows operating systems, to manage and monitor the traffic on your Internet connection. There are three versions of the application: Pro, Lite and Freeware. The Freeware version doesn't offer the full capabilities of controlling the traffic on your network, so you have to purchase the Pro or Lite version to cap your DSL bandwidth usage.

2
Install Bandwidth Manager from softperfect.com to limit the bandwidth levels on your Internet connection and shape how traffic is used on the local network. The software provides a central configuration that controls all traffic to a single Internet connection in a home, office or enterprise setting. You can also set different rules for accessing the connection via individual IP addresses, ports and protocols. The software runs on Windows and comes in two versions: Standard and Lite. The Lite version, as of the time of publication, is about $35 and the Standard costs around $100. Both versions let you cap DSL usage.

The software is available as a free download, comes with a full uninstaller program and offers a single user license. The application gives you real-time traffic monitoring, statistics reports of the stream and speed-limiting controls to minimize bandwidth usage.
