How to Replace the Power Mirror for My 2002 Chevrolet Impala
In 1994, the Impala officially returned to Chevy’s lineup as the Impala SS, which essentially is a high-performance Caprice Classic. After just three years, Chevy abruptly eliminated the Impala SS in 1996, along with the Caprice Classic. In 2000, Chevy reintroduced the new Impala, which was a front-wheel-drive, V-6-powered family car. Replacing the power mirror in the 2002 Impala requires removal of the door trim panel to gain access to the mirror’s fastening hardware, but is a straightforward task that most do-it-yourself mechanics can perform.
Things You'll Need
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Trim stick
- Ratchet
- Socket set
- Inch-pound torque wrench
Instructions
-
Removal
-
1
Open the door with the failed mirror and leave it open. Unfasten the screw inside the door handle bezel using a Phillips-head screwdriver.
-
2
Pull the inside door handle as if you are opening the door, then pull the bezel from the handle outward far enough to access the power lock switch. Allow the door handle to return to its resting position.
-
-
3
Pry the clips securing the power door lock switch outward with a flat-head screwdriver, then pull the power door lock switch from the inside door handle bezel. Set aside the bezel.
-
4
Remove the two screws from inside the door panel’s pull cup using a Phillips-head screwdriver. Lift the pull cup from the door panel just enough to access the wiring harnesses on the underside of the pull cup. Disconnect the wiring harnesses from their switches on the pull cup and set the pull cup aside.
-
5
Using a Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the screw on the front, upper corner of the door panel.
-
6
Unfasten the door panel’s retaining clips by prying around its perimeter with a trim stick. Lift the door panel upward to release the upper clips in the panel from the pinch weld at the top of the window slot, and remove the door panel.
-
7
Remove the foam insulator between the door panel and the side-view mirror, and disconnect the power mirror wiring harness.
-
8
Find the three power mirror-retaining nuts by looking through the three access holes in the door frame. Remove these three nuts using a ratchet and socket. Pull the side-view mirror from the door.
Installation
-
9
Guide the new side-view mirror onto the door, inserting its three studs through the three holes in the door. Hand-tighten the three retaining nuts onto the side-view mirror’s studs, then torque the nuts to 89 inch-pounds with an inch-pound torque wrench.
-
10
Plug the power mirror’s wiring harness into the wiring on the door panel.
-
11
Set the insulator back into place on the door frame, where the mirror bolts to the frame.
-
12
Set the door panel onto the door frame, lining up the clips on the top of the door panel with the pinch weld on the top of the door frame. Press the panel downward to lock the upper clips into place.
-
13
Verify that the retaining clips around the perimeter of the door panel align with their holes in the door frame. Make minor adjustments as needed to make the required alignment, then tap around the perimeter of the door panel with the palm of your hand to lock the clips into place.
-
14
Tighten the screw in the top, front corner of the door panel and the two inside the pull cup’s cavity with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
-
15
Reconnect the wiring harnesses to their respective receptacles in the switches on the pull cup and set the pull cup in its cavity in the door panel. Tighten the pull cup’s two screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
-
16
Snap the power door lock switch back into its cutout in the inside door handle bezel. Pull on the door handle as if you were opening the door, and slide the door handle bezel over the door handle. Tighten the door handle bezel’s screw with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
