How to Sew Swimwear

Although swimsuits use very little fabric, they can cost you a fortune to purchase. According to "The New York Times", swimsuits can cost from as low as $12 to as high as $340, depending on the designer. Shopping for a swimsuit can also be depressing for women because it is hard to find the perfect suit. Most of the time, you will find a top or bottom that fits and the other does not, or the swimsuit will be sagging in some places. You can avoid the shopping hassle and design your own customized inexpensive swimsuit from recycled materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a pattern for your swimsuit that will best fit your body. You can get a pattern online or from shops that deals with swimsuit fabrics.

    • 2

Use a measuring tape to take the measurement of your waist, bust and hips.

    • 3

Lay the T-shirts on a flat surface and cut the bottom hem. Ensure that you are cutting though both layers of the T-shirts.

    • 4

Cut two 1-inch strips from the bottom of the T-shirts, which you will use for the swimsuit straps.

    • 5

Pin the bikini top pattern on top of one of the T-shirts and outline the shape, then cut it. Cut precisely to ensure you have the right size of the swimsuit.

    • 6

Pin the pattern of the bikini bottom onto the second T-shirt and outline the pattern. Cut the front and back piece of the bottom from the T-shirt.

    • 7

Assemble the back and front piece of the bottom of your swimsuit and hand sew them together into a single piece, or you can use a sewing machine. Alternatively, you can tie them together at the sides using the straps you cut from the T-shirt.

    • 8

Assemble the pieces for the top of your swimsuit, which should be triangular in shape, and sew a seam on both pieces leaving an open tunnel.

    • 9

Use an elastic cord or a strap to connect the two triangles. The elastic cord or strap should be long enough to tie behind the back.
