How to Make Wood Cut Prints in Illustrator

You can use the layer modes and filters in Adobe Illustrator to alter an existing image to give it a wood cut style. For the best quality prints, start with a high-quality image of at least 300 dpi, such as photos taken by a quality digital camera or scanned to the computer using a high dpi.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Adobe Illustrator on your computer.

    • 2

Click “File” and then click “Open” to browse your computer for the desired image. Double-click the image to load it in the program.

    • 3

Hold the “Ctrl” key on your keyboard and press the “A” key to select the entire picture.

    • 4

Hold the “Ctrl” key and press the “C” key to copy the image. Then press the “V” key to place a copy of the image in a floating layer on top of the original image.

    • 5

Click the "mode" drop-down menu in the Layers window and select “Multiply.”

    • 6

Click the “Filter” menu from the top toolbar and select “Other.”

    • 7

Select “High Pass” from the menu, place the Radius setting at around "1.6" and click “OK.”

Select the "background image layer" in the Layers window, click the “Filter” menu and choose “Blur.”

    • 12

Select “Gaussian Blur” and move the Radius slider to about "6." You may need to experiment with this setting until you get the blur effect that looks best.

    • 13

Click the “Layer” menu and select “Merge Layers” to flatten the image.

    • 14

Save the image under a different file name from the original on your computer. You now have a wood cut style image that you can print.
