How to Repair an iPod Mini Clickwheel

If your iPod Mini's clickwheel malfunctions, you won't be able to navigate and select your favorite tunes. Glitches in the application and outdated software typically cause the clickwheel to be unresponsive. Reset, and if necessary, restore to get the clickwheel operational again.

Instructions

    • 1

Confirm that your iPod mini has a full charge. If it doesn't, before proceeding to the next step, turn on your computer and connect the iPod using the USB connector.

    • 2

Set the "Hold" switch to the "Hold" position, then take it off of "Hold."

    • 3

Press the "Select" and "Menu" buttons at the same time and hold both buttons down until the Apple logo is displayed.

    • 4

Use the USB connector to connect the iPod mini to your computer if the clickwheel still doesn't work. Verify that your computer is on and it has an Internet connection.

    • 5

Open "iTunes." The iPod mini Update should display. If it doesn't, select "Start." Select "All Programs," then "iPod mini." Follow the instructions on the screen to restore your iPod mini.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can still restore your iPod mini if your computer doesn't have an Internet connection. Install the iPod CD. After that, click "Start," "All Programs," and then select "iPod."

  • These steps apply to clickwheels that are movable, but not selecting the programs as normal. If the clickwheel part is physically sticking, please contact Apple for further support. You might need to open a repair ticket.

  • A restore erases all of your saved data including photos, files, contacts, calendar, and song information.
