How to Hook Up Studio Monitors to X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion Series
Creative Labs’ X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion Series soundcard is designed with the serious gamer rather than the audio production professional in mind. As a result, it lacks the necessary outputs for all but the smallest studio monitors, speakers specially designed for audio production. However, the X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion Series’ output can be routed to monitor speakers via most external USB audio interfaces, such as the M-Audio Fast Track, the PreSonus Firebox or the Apogee Duet 2.
Instructions
-
-
1
Turn your computer’s volume all the way down. If your external audio interface has a built-in volume control, turn that all the way down, as well.
-
2
Turn off your computer before making connections between audio components to prevent unexpected feedback that can damage your equipment. If your audio interface is not automatically powered by the USB port, turn it off as well.
-
-
3
Connect one end of the one-quarter inch TRS audio cable to the top Line Out jack on the X-Fi Titanium Fatality Champion soundcard and connect the other end of the cable to an available input on your audio interface. Most audio interfaces designed for home use have an appropriate input jack. The jack will be labeled “Line In” or similar.
-
4
Connect the monitors to the output jacks on the external audio interface. The cables used vary from model to model, but most use standard analog RCA audio cables with red and white connectors. The vast majority of external audio interfaces, including consumer-level ones, have output jacks that can accept this kind of connector.
-
5
Turn on your computer. Because you turned the volume down, you will not hear any sound from the monitors yet.
-
6
Launch any music player application, such as iTunes or WinAmp, and play any song. The song will be used to test the monitors’ output.
-
7
Turn up the volume on the computer and the external audio interface until you reach a comfortable listening level.

Tips & Warnings
You can connect your X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion card directly to your monitors if they have a one-quarter inch TRS input. However, it’s likely that a direct connection using this kind of wire will result in a significant loss of volume. The external audio interface acts as an amplifier to keep the signal strong.
