Electric mouse traps remove mice in a humane way.

Mice and rats can chew through wiring, eat through walls and damage your home. Building your own electric trap will allow you to kill and dispose of these pests in a humane way. Glue traps and other traditional traps leave mice and rats injured, potentially dying in your crawlspaces. Although killing mice is not always pleasant it may be necessary if you have many mice in your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of 1-by-6 inch board approximately 12 inches long by 12 inches wide. Cut a matching top piece and four wall pieces of the same size.

    • 2

Cover the bottom piece of board in aluminum foil and place a shallow saucer of milk on top of it.

    • 3

Cut the end off of an extension cord so only the male plug remains. Strip the brown and blue wires back 1 centimeter and tape the blue wire to the foil and the brown wire into the milk.

    • 4

Cut a half circle out of the bottom of one of your wall boards for the mouse to slip through once the unit is built.

    • 5

Attach the four wall pieces and top together using hot glue to create a box with an open bottom. Ensure the half circle you cut is at the bottom of the box.

    • 6

Carefully place the box over the base without disturbing the wiring.

    • 7

Plug in the base to make the trap live.

Tips & Warnings

  • For larger rodents and pests make the box and base larger in size.

  • Do not touch the end of the wire, milk or aluminum foil while the unit it plugged in.

  • When a mouse has been caught, unplug the unit, remove the mouse, clean and reset the unit for the next one.

  • Do not use this type of trap if there are pets that can get to it or children that can reach their hands into it.

  • This is a homemade trap and is suggested as a last resort only; it is always more effective to purchase an electric trap from a manufacturer or retailer.
