How to Install a Flip-Down Monitor With a Built-In DVD Player & Infrared Transmitter
Flip-down monitors with built-in DVD players and infrared allow passengers to view video and listen to audio with wireless headphones via an infrared transmitter. The technique used to install a flip-down monitor with a DVD player and infrared transmitter is the same as installing a standard monitor; finding a centralized location to allow for easy viewing, which is free of any obstructions that will block the infrared signal.
Things You'll Need
- Utility knife
- Mild adhesive remover spray
- Adhesive spray
- 1 piece of plywood or plastic, 1/4 inch thick
- Pencil
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Crescent wrench
- Wire stripper/crimper
- Sandpaper
- Ring terminal
Instructions
-
-
1
Select the location where you will mount the flip-down monitor.
-
2
Remove the upholstery from the area with a utility knife. Cut the upholstery the same size as the flip-down monitor’s mounting base and save it for reapplication later. Use a mild adhesive remover spray to facilitate removal of the upholstery if needed.
-
-
3
Spray the area of the ceiling headboard from which you removed the upholstery with adhesive spray. Place a piece of 1/4-inch thick plywood or plastic on the adhesive and hold it in place until it sets, approximately two to five minutes, depending on the curing time of the adhesive.
-
4
Affix the upholstery you removed to the plywood or plastic with adhesive spray. Again using adhesive spray, secure the template, if your flip-down monitor supplied one, to the area of the headboard to which you affixed the upholstery.
-
5
Mark the mounting holes of the template with a pencil. If your flip-down monitor did not provide one, mark using the holes in the flip-down monitor’s base.
-
6
Screw the self-driving screws and washers included with the flip-down monitor to attach it the plywood or plastic affixed to the headboard.
-
7
Remove the battery’s negative cable with a crescent wrench and remove the cable from the terminal. Route the wires of the flip-down monitor through the headboard and door panels. Remove a 1/2 inch from the leads of all three wires with a wire stripper. The red lead must connect to the positive input on the starter.
-
8
Route the black ground wire to a bolt on the cars chassis that will serve as the grounding point. Remove the bolt.
-
9
Use sandpaper to clear any paint from the grounding point, wipe it clean with a moist towel and allow it to dry. Crimp a ring terminal to the ground wire with a wire crimper and insert the bolt through it. Screw the bolt back in the chassis.
-
10
Secure the yellow wire to the battery’s positive terminal clamp by removing the bolt with the crescent wrench and reattaching it. Attach the negative cable to the car battery.

Tips & Warnings
Maintain as much distance as possible between the yellow and red wires when routing to avoid line noise during playback.
