How to Hook Up a Modem to a PS3 With a Telephone Cable

Telephone cables still have practical applications, such as establishing an Internet connection with a PS3.

A telephone line-to-modem connection with a PlayStation 3 utilizes a dial-up modem and the PS3’s “Line In” port. The long latency times of dial-up modems make them impractical for the vast majority of today's games, but some games, such as “Halo: Combat Evolved” and “Quake 3: Arena,” perform capably with the connection and 56 Kbps transfer speed. The low cost of dial-up Internet connections makes hooking a PS3 to a cable modem with a telephone attractive to some, but the prevalence of broadband connections has all but phased out the use of dial-up for gaming purposes.
