How to Do a Pop Up Slide

How to Do a Pop Up Slide thumbnail
Unlike a standard feet first slide, the pop-up slide allows a base runner to react quickly if an error occurs.

The pop-up slide can help add another dimension to your baseball talents. This base running technique involves standing straight up immediately after sliding into second or third base. The pop-up motion will allow you to save valuable seconds on the base paths and enables you to react quickly if the ball is overthrown. With this move in your arsenal, you will add extra stats to your score sheet and become a legitimate base running threat.

Instructions

    • 1

Run at full speed toward the bag. Lean backward, sit down and raise your arms to begin your slide.

    • 2

Tuck your left leg beneath your right. Extend your right leg, keeping your knee slightly bent.

    • 3

Plant the front of your right foot against the edge of the base. Use your leg muscles and forward momentum to press against the bag. Straighten your legs and return to a standing position.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also perform a pop-up slide with your rear foot. Let your right leg slide over the top of the bag, and then plant and stand up with your left foot.

  • Once you've completed your slide, look to your third base coach for base running signals.

  • Use caution when attempting a pop-up slide. Improper form can lead to knee and ankle injuries.
