How to Build Raised Stands for Grow Boxes

Raised stands for grow boxes benefit the home gardener in many ways. They keep the grow boxes off the ground and make them basically slug-proof. Normal ground pests don't find plants that are raised above the ground. Raised stands are also portable so the grow boxes can be wheeled around to the best growing location. The height of the stands makes it more convenient for working in the grow boxes if bending is a physical problem. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place a pair of 2-inch by 2-inch by 36-inch-long legs on a level surface. Measure 12 inches from the bottom of each leg with a measuring tape and mark it with a pencil. Attach a 36-inch-long board with 3-inch-long wood screws and an electric screwdriver at the 12-inch marks. Attach another board at the tops of the legs, keeping the edges of the board and legs even. Use two screws for each board so the sides don't spin. Create another piece just like the first so you have two identical sides.

    • 2

Connect the two sides by attaching a 2-inch by 2-inch by 24-inch board to the tops of the legs, and another one 12 inches from the bottom. Attach the last two 24-inch boards to the other short side of the frame. The frame is now a rectangle shape on 12-inch-tall legs.

    • 3

Measure the center of each long side board that sits on top of the legs, and mark the spots. Nail one of the 1-inch by 2-inch by 30-inch boards at the two marks. Nail the rest of the 30-inch boards to either side of the first, evenly spaced. Keep the edges of the boards even with each other. This gives the stand a table-like top with spaces between the boards for water drainage.

    • 4

Smooth any rough areas down with rough sandpaper. Paint the stand with weatherproof stain or paint. Let the stand dry for at least 24 hours or the recommended time on the product used. Flip the stand upside down. Screw caster wheels on the bottom of each leg. Set the grow boxes on top of the stand and push it to a sunny location.

Tips & Warnings

  • The size of the stand is adjustable by measuring the bottom of the grow boxes and creating the stand with those measurements. The height is another area where the stand can be adjusted. Make the stand the right height for you.

  • Wooden projects exposed to the elements outside deteriorate quicker than inside projects. Weatherproof the stands with outdoor paint or stain to make the wood last longer.
