How to Make a Lap Quilting Stand
To make the quilting process easier, a quilting stand is used to hold the fabric, batting and backing together. The frame of the quilting stand holds all of the elements of a quilt taught while it's being completed. The stand can be made out of inexpensive lumber; it is sturdy enough to hold thick layers of quilting materials and lightweight enough to rest comfortably on your lap.
Things You'll Need
- Pencil
- 2-inch-by-2-inch narrow wooden boards
- Measuring tape
- Circular saw
- Fabric scissors
- Canvas
- Staple gun
- 4 Large C-clamps
Instructions
-
-
1
Determine the width of your to-be finished quilt. Increase that number by 12 and write it down.
-
2
Cut each of the 2-inch-by-2-inch boards to the measurement determined in Step 1 using the circular saw.
-
-
3
Cut two square pieces of canvas that are 4-inches bigger than the determined measurement with fabric scissors. Center a piece of canvas over each board and use the staple gun to secure them to the wood. These are quilt-attachment strips.
-
4
Cut two new pieces of wood so they are both 24 inches. You will use these as side boards for the frame.
-
5
Attach the quilt fabric, batting and backing loosely with a back stitch. Attach each end of the quilt to the quilt-attachment strips using a back stitch. Roll the quilt over both wood strips until the distance between them is 24 inches.
-
6
Secure the quilt-attachment strips to the 24-inch side boards using C-clamps.

Tips & Warnings
To use, lay the quilt stand over your lap and, when you're done stitching the part of the quilt in the center of the frame, remove the C-clamps and roll one side of the quilt toward the edges to start on a new section.
You always can lay the quilt frame over two chairs or sawhorses if you are tired of holding the quilting stand on your lap.
