How to Light the Pilot on a Maytag Range

How to Light the Pilot on a Maytag Range thumbnail
Standing pilot light ranges have a pilot light that stays lit all the time.

A strong breeze, turning the gas off or a buildup of dirt and grime all can cause the pilot light of a Maytag range to go out. Once the pilot light is out, the Maytag stove becomes useless until you physically light the appliance. Newer Maytag ranges do not have a pilot light and instead feature an electronic ignition that does not require lighting. Refer to the owner’s manual of your specific model for more information. Instructions

    • 1

Turn the burner knob to the “off” position. Remove the grates from the range and place them in a safe location.

    • 2

Lift the range hood and locate the pilot light. Typically, the pilot light is located between the two burners.

    • 3

Light a match and hold the flame to the pilot light. The pilot will light with a small flame. If the pilot does not light, check to make sure the gas is turned on.

    • 4

Close the hood carefully and replace the grates. Turn the burner knob on low to light the burners.

    • 5

Light the oven pilot light by pulling the broiler open and looking inside for the oven pilot light. The pilot light is typically located in the middle back of the oven. Hold a lit match to the oven pilot light until a small flame appears. Blow out the match and close the broiler door.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the grates are dirty, clean them with warm, soapy water before placing them back on the range.

  • Open windows in the room in which the range is located for 30 minutes to 1 hour before attempting to light the pilot. This will clear any built-up gas from the room. Gas and its fumes are highly flammable and even the tiniest spark can ignite them.
