How to Make a Roof Rake With Wire
Roof rakes are used to manually pull snow from your rooftop. Having too much snow on your roof can cause ice jams to form in your gutters or melting snow to back up and leak into your home. You can produce your own inexpensive roof rake that is made out of wood and held together with wire. Keeping your roof free of excess snow is an important, yet frequently overlooked, part of home maintenance. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Piece of plywood approximately 2 feet by 12 inches
- Scrap wood approximately 2 feet long
- Long piece of wood for handle
- Drill with 1/4 drill bit
- Two long wood screws
- Screwdriver
- Two wire clothes hangers
- Wire cutters

Place of your piece of scrap wood onto the end of a longer piece so that it forms a “T.” Screw the pieces together through the scrap wood and into the handle. Align the "T" of the handle with the top edge of the plywood and drill four evenly spaced holes through the wood and plywood.

Straighten out one of the wire clothes hangers and cut it into four pieces. Place these pieces through the four holes and twist them securely, remove any excess wire with your wire cutters. Drill a hole, sideways, through your wooden handle approximately 12 inches up from the "T". Drill two additional holes into the sides of the plywood board, center the holes along the sides and approximately half an inch from the outer edge.

Straighten out your other wire hanger and pass it halfway through the hole in your handle. Bend the sides of the wire toward the holes in the plywood and pass the wires through the holes. Bend the wires around the back of the plywood and twist them around the first wire at least two to three times. Cut off any excess with your wire clippers.
