Sanding Raised Panel MDF Cabinet Doors

120 to 150 grit sandpaper is sufficient to sand MDF.

Medium density fiberboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made from softwoods that have been broken down and pressed together. It is used for various wood products, including moldings, doors, bookcases and cabinets. MDF is sanded and smoothed in the factory and ready to paint upon arrival. However, if your MDF cabinet door was not painted soon after installation, dirt and grime could have built up -- especially along the raised panel -- and thus, a light sanding is in order before painting.

Things You'll Need

• 120 to 150 grit sandpaper
• Rag
• Paint brush
• Dish soap

Instructions

1. Lightly sand the MDF door with 120 to 150 grit sandpaper. Press lightly only to remove any dirt, debris and grime that may be on the door since MDF comes already sanded and ready to paint. Sand in the direction of the grain. Be cautious around the raised panel edge so you do not damage it.

2. Brush away the dust with a rag. Along the raised edge, use a paint brush to remove the dust.

3. Clean the MDF with rag moistened with warm, soapy water to remove any remaining dust. Do not saturate the door, especially near the edges of the raised panel where there could be gaps that the water can seep into. After the door dries, it is ready to paint.

Tips & Warnings

• If the door is attached to the cabinet, it's easiest to sand and paint if you take it off and remove the hardware.

• If the door has an unfinished edge and is extremely porous and rough, apply drywall compound to that edge. When it dries, sand until it is smooth and even.

• Sand in a well-ventilated area. Wear a dust mask so you do not breathe in the dust.
