Sewing an Over-the-Door Shoe Holder
Shoes piled up around doors and on closet floors make a room appear unsightly, and shoes tucked away in shoe boxes are hard to get to. Maximize your storage space by installing an over-the-door shoe holder. You can sew a shoe holder at home using basic techniques and materials purchased inexpensively at any craft supply store. Shoes will stay out of the way yet remain highly accessible, enabling you to view and select shoes efficiently. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Cotton fabric
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Straight pins
- Sewing needle
- Thread
- Wooden dowel, 1-inch thick, 36-inches long
- 2 flat door hooks

Cut out a rectangle from cotton fabric measuring 36 inches wide and 60 inches long.

Turn the edges of the rectangle under by 1/4 inch, then by another 1/4 inch and pin the turned edges in place with straight pins.

Sew the pinned edges with a needle and thread, then remove the straight pins.

Fold one of the shorter ends over by 4 inches, and sew it in place to create a casing along that end.

Cut out 16 smaller rectangles from cotton from fabric measuring 6-inches wide and 8-inches long.

Turn the edges of each rectangle in by 1/4 inch, then by another 1/4 inch. Pin and sew the turned edges in place, then remove the straight pins.

Lay the larger rectangle vertically onto a table top, and arrange the smaller rectangles vertically in two rows of eight rectangles on top of the larger rectangle. Space the smaller rectangles 6 inches apart.

Sew along the bottom edges and side edges on all of the smaller rectangles to secure them onto the larger rectangle. The top of each smaller rectangle should remain open.

Slide a 36-inch wooden dowel through the casing, then hook two flat door hooks under the ends of the dowel.

Hook the flat ends of the door hooks over the door for use.
