Removing a Kohler Horizontal Lever

The underside of your Kohler sink bristles with hardware that controls the flow of water to and from the sink. Behind the drain pipe a horizontal lever guides the action of the stopper on the surface of the sink. Removing the lever disables the stopper, but also permits removal of the stopper from the sink. Disconnecting the lever properly ensures its removal without accidental damage to any part of the lift assembly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Open your sink cabinet doors for access to the sink stopper lift assembly. If necessary, clear enough room beneath the sink to provide an adequate work space. Keep a flashlight handy for better illumination.

    • 2

Locate the horizontal lever emerging from the back of the drain pipe. The lever attaches at one to the pipe and at the other end to a vertical link called the “clevis.” A knurled retaining nut secures the Kohler horizontal lever to the drain pipe. A metal clip fixes the lever to the clevis.

    • 3

Rotate the knurled retaining nut to the left until it comes loose. Slip the horizontal lever free of the side of the drain pipe.

    • 4

Pinch the clip at the other end of the horizontal lever, and slide the lever from the clevis.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take the opportunity of detaching the horizontal lever to remove the stopper and clean it of any soap scum or mold. A clean stopper allows water to flow more effectively into the drain.
