Make her cake memorable with a fondant ballet slipper.

Ballet got its start when men and women performed theatrical dances complete with ornate costumes in large banquet halls for the royal Italian courts in the early 1400s. Marie Ann Cupis de Camargo, a dancer of the Royal Ballet, is credited with removing the heels from her shoes. Since the ballet slipper is one of the most recognized symbols of this art form, consider using fondant to craft a lovely cake topper for a ballet lover. Fondant is a cake icing with a dough-like consistency that is often used to create cake decorations. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place wax paper over the surface of a table. Wax paper makes it easier to work with fondant. Dust it with powdered sugar.

    • 2

Roll out one-third cup of fondant with a rolling pin. Press your fingers into the fondant until you have a small well in the center. Add a couple of drops of red food coloring to the fondant until you achieve a rosy pink color.

    • 3

Knead the fondant with your hands until the food coloring is evenly distributed. If the shade is too dark, add a bit more fondant to lighten the color.

    • 4

Add a dusting of powdered sugar to the fondant if it feels too sticky as you knead.

    • 5

Roll a small amount of fondant into a sausage shape to create the base for your ballet slipper.

    • 6

Form a hollow center in the middle of the sausage shape with your fingertips.

    • 7

Place the ballet slipper on the cake, in the place that you desire.

    • 8

Roll a thin strip of fondant. This will be the shoe ties of your ballet slipper. Cut this strip in half so you have two matching pieces. Use a dab of piping gel or water to attach each strip to the inside of the ballet slipper. Repeat this step on the other side of the ballet slipper. Be careful when attaching these pieces that you don’t alter the shape of the ballet slipper. Arrange the shoe ties around the shoe, bending the strips slightly to give them a realistic appearance.

    • 9

Pipe small rounded beads around the opening of the ballet slipper with a round cake decorating tip and white buttercream icing. Pipe a white bow on the front of the ballet slipper as well. Add a tiny candy flower to the center of the bow.
