How to Make a Cowboy Hat With Ribbon

How to Make a Cowboy Hat With Ribbon thumbnail
Cowboy hats can be made from two separate molds.

A homemade cowboy hat can make a suitable accessory for a cowboy costume or party favors. The materials you use for the cowboy hat create an overall tone, which can be customized to go along with a particular theme. A frilly theme, for instance, might call for a cowboy hat to be made with ribbon. If you want to make a cowboy hat with ribbon, construct the hat mold for the ribbon to wrap around.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a circular tracer, such as a coffee can, on top of the sheet of card stock. Use a pencil to trace around the circular tracer. This will become the hole in the cowboy hat where the crown of the head fits into. Use a craft knife to carve out the circle that you traced and reserve the circular piece.

    • 2

Draw a rectangle that's 4 inches from all sides of the circular hole in the card stock. Use a ruler to measure the 4-inch dimension. This rectangular piece will become the cowboy hat brim. The front and back sides of the rectangle should be approximately 1 foot long, while the sides should be 1 1/2 feet long.

    • 3

Cut the rectangle out of the card stock sheet with scissors. You will end up with a rectangle that has a round hole in the center.

    • 4

Use sewing tape to measure the circumference of the center hole in inches. Place the sewing tape onto the remaining sheet of card stock, horizontally. Mark the amount of inches that are the circumference of the hole on a straight horizontal line. Turn this line into a rectangle by creating two vertical lines at the ends of the horizontal line. Each vertical line should be 4 inches long. Fill in the rectangle with a second horizontal line at the top. Cut out this rectangle.

    • 5

Fit the rectangle into a circle by joining the two ends together. Use a hot glue gun to secure the two ends of the rectangle. Apply more hot glue around the bottom of the new circle, and set it on top of the hole in the cowboy hat brim. Apply another strip of hot glue to the top of the new circle that is on the brim. Place the reserved circular piece from Step 1 on top of the glue. Now you have a cowboy hat mold. Allow the glued pieces to dry for one hour.

    • 6

Round the corners of the rectangular cowboy hat brim with scissors. Roll the sides of the rectangle up towards the center of the hat.

    • 7

Cover the bowl of the cowboy hat with 2-inch width flat ribbon. Since the sides of the cowboy hat's brim are rolled up, focus on gluing the ribbon to the bowl of the hat, where others will see the ribbon the most. Use the hot glue gun to apply the glue around the bowl and then set the ribbon on top of the glue.
