How to Make a Costume With a Styrofoam Shell Attached to the Back
Costumes can be expensive to purchase in stores. Depending on what you want to dress up as, affixing a decorated Styrofoam shell to your back can create many different types of homemade costume ideas, including turtles, ladybugs, crabs and bumblebees. To create a Styrofoam shell costume, first decide what you want to dress up as.

Decorate your Styrofoam shell. How you decorate your shell will depend on what you want to dress up as. For example, if you want to be a ladybug, use latex house paint to color your Styrofoam shell red. Let the paint dry thoroughly, then use markers to draw a black line down the middle of the shell, with large black, filled-in circles on either side of the line. If, on the other hand, you want to dress up as a turtle, use paint to color your shell green, then, when the paint is totally dry, use a darker green or black marker to draw hexagonal shell details on the Styrofoam's surface. Use a glitter pen to highlight details on your shell and make it stand out more.

Lay a long-sleeved shirt on a flat surface with the back of the shirt facing up towards you. Spread the back fabric of the shirt taught and wrinkle-free. It helps to put cardboard inside the shirt to stretch the fabric out flat. Lay your Styrofoam shell upside down and cover the flat surface of the shell with 3M's 77 glue. This multipurpose adhesive spray glue bonds Styrofoam to fabric.

Pick up your shell so that the decorated surface is facing you, and lay its flat surface against the back of your long-sleeved shirt, with the top of the shell lined up between the armpits of the shirt. Allow the glue to dry so that the Styrofoam is bound to the shirt.
