Use white or multiple colors for plastic cloth decorations.

The wedding cake is one of the highlights of the event, and for it to be a subject of conversation for the right reasons, it has to be skillfully decorated. Using a plastic cloth is a nifty and economic alternative to sugar or marzipan cake decorations. Plastic cloth decorations also have a number of benefits when compared to paper or sugar decorations, as they are easy to remove and they won't melt or change shape when in contact with moisture, elevated temperature or the icing. Instructions

    • 1

Spread the icing on the cake using a stainless steel spatula and put the cake aside.

    • 2

Sketch a design for your cake and establish how you want to decorate each tier. You can apply flowers or lettering, wrap stripes of colored plastic cloth around the cake or combine all of these decorations.

    • 3

Draw a pattern for the flower with three to six petals according to your choice. Make three patterns, one with a 3-inch diameter, one with a 2-inch diameter and the last with a 1.5-inch diameter. Cut the plastic cloth following the patterns. For each flower you want to make, you need three flower cutouts, one of each size. Punch holes in the middle of each cutout and place three different-sized cutouts one on top of the other, the smallest being on top. Slide a plastic straw through three of the cutouts and make a knot at the end of the straw. You will cover the knot when you add the icing. Cut the straw to the desired size and insert each straw into the cake.

Cut two or several long stripes of plastic cloth and twist them together. Wrap this stripe along a tier and link the ends using double-sided tape.

    • 5

Print out some letters and cut them out to create patterns. Cut plastic letters using these patterns. Apply the letters to the cake. You can write the names of the bride and groom or keywords such as “love,” “joy” or “I do.”

Select a tip for the pastry bag and fill it with icing. Apply pressure on the bag, so the icing starts to come out. Test the thickness and experiment by drawing a few lines or letter shapes before you get to apply these on your cake. Decorate the cake and the plastic cloth decorations with dots, stripes, various motifs or lettering. Apply icing in the middle of the flowers to cover the visible part of the straws.

Dust the decorations with superfine sugar, which adds to the elegance of the cake.
