How to Design a Basketball-Themed Room in an Apartment

If basketball is your passion, have some fun incorporating it into your apartment's decor. Your palette will be determined by your favorite team's colors. The main elements of the game such as the hoop, ball and scoreboard can be used to accessorize your room. Instructions

1. Paint the walls with your favorite team's colors. Use one color to paint three walls. Apply the second contrasting color to the wall where the main piece of furniture will be placed. Depending on the room being decorated, it could a bed, desk or sofa.

2. Paint a large scoreboard on one wall using chalkboard paint. This can function as a memo board and message center in any room. It is especially well suited for an office or bedroom.

3. Create a tall headboard with painted plywood for the bed if you are decorating a bedroom. Mount a basketball hoop at the top of the headboard. Mount the hoop directly to a wall if the room is an office. The resident basketball player can enjoy tossing a soft, foam ball while relaxing on the bed or sitting at the desk.

4. Frame team posters to display on the walls. Inexpensive black commercial frames will complement the posters and are available at your local craft store.

5. Illustrate the team mascot on a wall using artist's brushes and craft paint. Create a large image to make a colorful and fun focal point in the room.

6. Assemble a large collage, mounting a team shirt, team autographs, ticket stubs and newspaper clippings onto matte board and frame it under glass. Display it on a prominent wall.

7. Dress your furniture with team or sport linens. If there is a bed, use basketball-themed sheets. Top your bed or sofa with a blanket featuring the team's logo. Add accent pillows in team colors.

8. Place an area rug in front of a sofa, desk or bed that showcases the team's logo, colors or a general basketball design.

Tips & Warnings

• Stencil a tan, room-sized rug to resemble a basketball court.

• Paint closet doors to look like locker doors. Add team stickers or names to them.

• Substitute a life-sized photographic figure of your favorite player for the painted mascot on your wall.
