DIY: Tube Top to Skirt

If you have an oversized tube top and want to refashion it, you can easily transform it into a skirt. A tube top can double as a body hugging pencil skirt. Don't use a cropped tube top for the conversion; you need a top that will be long enough to work as a skirt. Be creative when deciding how to wear the skirt. Use it to top contrasting leggings and try all sorts of tops -- from baggy to form-fitting. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Hemming the Skirt

    • 1

Decide what length you want your new skirt to be. Try on the tube top as a skirt and mark the desired length with pins.

    • 2

Using scissors, cut the bottom of the skirt an inch below the pins. Remove the pins. Fold the bottom inch of the skirt evenly under the fabric and secure the hem with pins.

    • 3

Using a sewing machine, follow the path of the pins and create a hem in the fabric. Remove each pin before it reaches the foot of the sewing machine.

    Adding Elastic to the Skirt

    • 4

Wrap the measuring tape around your waist and make a note of the resulting circumference. Choose the part of your waist where you would like the skirt to fall.

    • 5

Unroll the elastic and cut it to the same length as your waist circumference. Pin the elastic 1 inch down from the top of the tube top.

    • 6

Fold the top of the tube top over the elastic band and sew shut. Leave the edges open so that the ends of the elastic are accessible.

    • 7

Using the sewing machine, sew the two pieces of elastic together securely. Sew the tube top seam shut so that the elastic is not visible.
