Concealed hinges, also known as "invisible hinges" or "piano hinges," provide one of the most secure methods of hanging storage shed doors. From the outside of the shed door, the entire hinge is concealed between the door and the door frame and provides security against thieves that would otherwise be able to remove the hinge screws to gain entry. Concealed hinges are also more weather resistant since they are hidden inside the door away from the elements. You can install concealed hinges with a few tools and basic do-it-yourself ability.

Step 2

Measure and mark the concealed hinge at the same distance as the door using a marker.

Step 3

Position the hinge in a miter box and secure it with a C-clamp. This assures a clean right angle cut across the surface of the hinge.

Step 4

Cut the hinge at the mark using a hack saw.

Step 5

Position the hinge with the hinge pivot facing the front of the shed door. Align the hinge from top to bottom. Have a helper hold it in place while ensuring the pivot rod is slightly beyond the edge of the door.

Step 6

Install the hinge to the door using the appropriate screwdriver and the screws provided with the hinge. Tighten the screws clockwise.

Step 7

Raise the door into position within the jamb. Wood shims can support the door at the bottom for clearance and the helper can aid in holding the door and maintaining its alignment as you secure the remaining hinge strap to the jamb.

Step 8

Secure the hinge to the shed's door jamb with the enclosed screws. Tighten the screws using the screwdriver.

Tip

Repeat Steps 1 through 8 on the remaining storage shed door if double-doors are used.

Galvanized, aluminum and stainless steel shed hinges resist corrosion.

Concealed piano hinges can be used on either side of the door whether the door opens in or out.
