How to Unlock the FPS Cap on an EVO

Software updates provide your EVO with the latest features.

The frames per second, or FPS cap, was a limit imposed on the HTC EVO 4G upon its release in June 2010. The cap limited images and videos viewed on the device or an external display to 30 FPS. Although higher frame rates don't make a visible difference in the quality of still images, they can offer a noticeable improvement on videos with a lot of motion. HTC unlocked the FPS cap with an over-the-air update. Update your EVO to the latest OTA software to lift the cap.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "Menu" key at the EVO's home screen.

    • 2

Tap "Settings" from the options at the bottom of the screen.

    • 3

Select "System Updates" from the list that appears.

    • 4

      Tap "HTC Software Update."

    • 5

Tap "Check Now" to have your EVO begin searching for any available software updates. You'll be notified if there is an update via a new window.

    • 6

Tap "OK" to begin the download.

    • 7

Select "Yes" to confirm that you understand the "Data Fee Warning," and to commence with the download. The FPS cap will automatically be removed after updating.

Tips & Warnings

  • HTC recommends that your HTC EVO 4G is plugged into a charger during a software update, and that you allow at least 20 minutes for the device to download and install the upgrade.

  • Use 4G or Wi-Fi, if available, to download the software update more quickly than on a 3G network.

  • Be aware of any limitations associated with your service provider's data plan, as software updates are large files and will count against your data limit if downloaded on 3G or 4G. Avoid any data limitations by using Wi-Fi, if available.
