System Preferences can be accessed through the Apple menu.

Vine is an open-source VNC server for the Mac OS X operating system. If you connect your computer to the VNC server and you are not receiving a very fast connection, there are a number of steps you can take to improve the refresh rate and performance. One such fix is to disable the desktop background you have set on your computer so VNC does not have to resend an intensive image every time you connect to the server. If you want to disable your computer's desktop background, you can do so through the computer's System Preferences application.

Click the "Apple" icon in the computer's menu bar and select the "System Preferences..." option from the drop-down menu that appears.
