How to Change the Minus Button on a Mac

If the minus button on your Mac keyboard is damaged or not working correctly, you can replace it yourself. Key buttons for most Mac computer models are available for individual purchase. Each key button is made up of two parts: the key cap and the scissor mechanism. The key cap is the top of the key button that displays the corresponding character. The scissor mechanism attaches the key cap to the keyboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Grasp the minus key button on the keyboard and lift it up to pop the key cap and scissor mechanism off the keyboard.

    • 2

Place the replacement key upside down on a flat surface and carefully pry the scissor mechanism up from the key cap with the tweezers until it pops off.

    • 3

Lay the scissor mechanism into the empty spot in the keyboard where you removed the minus key from.

    • 4

Hold the scissor mechanism in position while using tweezers to nudge one of the hooks on the mechanism into the corresponding tab on the left side in the key spot.

    • 5

Use the tweezers to press the other side of the scissor mechanism into the other hook. This will hold the scissor mechanism in place in the keyboard.

    • 6

Place the new key cap on top of the scissor mechanism and press down firmly on it until it snaps into place.
