How to Hem With a New Home Serger

New Home sergers, manufactured by Janome, are multi-purpose sewing machines used to execute all manner of sewing techniques, including the basic blind hem. Pre-press your hem into place with a hot iron, and attach the rotary even foot hem attachment to the machine’s presser foot. Use the rotary even foot attachment to sew the hem with the perfect blind hem stitch.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the blind hem guide. Remove the presser foot from the serger and unscrew the attachment screw on the side. Slide the blind hem guide onto the presser foot at the side where you removed the screw, and replace and tighten the screw to hold the attachment in place. Make sure the blind hem guide rests just to the left of the two red lines marked down the center of the presser foot.

    • 2

Snap the presser foot back onto the machine. Choose the length of your blind hem stitch.

    • 3

Fold the hem edge of your garment under, toward the wrong side of your fabric and press. Fold the hem under again to conceal all raw edges and press again. Turn the garment over and unfold the fabric just enough to expose about 1/4 of an inch of your first fold.

    • 4

Place the first fold against the guide on the presser foot and sew the hem into place.
