How to Paint a Growth Chart for Children on the Wall
Growth charts let kids know how much they’ve grown, and they also teach measurement. The growth chart can consist of different shapes based on the kid’s interests or the theme of the room. The chart needs numbers that let the kid know how much he’s grown. Stencils simplify painting by keeping the edges of paint even, allowing the chart to look professional. With a sharp knife, cut out a custom design to paint a unique chart.

1
Pick a wall that is as smooth as possible. Walls with bumps or cracks do not produce a clean design. Cover the area with a new coat of paint, preferably flat paint.
-
2
Use stenciling brushes to apply the stencil paint to the wall. Use either masking tape or an adhesive to hold the stencil to the wall. If you use an adhesive, let it dry enough to hold the stencil in place.

3
Put the stencil paint on a paper plate. Dip the stencil brush into the paint and dab the paint on the wall through the stencil. Dab the areas with the least paint and slowly fill the stencil in, until the paint is evenly distributed.

4
Purchase number and line stencils from a craft store. Use a ruler or tape measure to position the numbers correctly on the wall and adhere the number stencils to the wall. Fill the stencil in with paint. Remove the stencil, measure the next level of height and repeat the process. Paint each number on the wall.
-
5
Adhere the line stencil to the wall, next to the corresponding number. Fill in the stencil with paint. Remove the stencil and move to the next number.
-
6
Wait for the paint to dry. Remove the stencils and wash them with soap and water, if you used water-based paint. Otherwise, use acetone or paint thinner. Cleaning them makes them reusable, which is helpful if you need to repair the growth chart.
-
7
Print out objects that you want to use for the stencil. Cut the image out with scissors. Tape the image to the stencil sheet. Place the stencil on a flat object hard enough to resist a sharp knife.
-
8
Poke an Extracto knife into the stencil and cut along the edge of the printed image. Remove the tape, inside part of the stencil sheet and the printed paper. Cut the rough edges of the inside of the stencil with the Extracto knife.

Tips & Warnings
If the stencil paint does not easily stick to the base coat, use sand paper to lightly sand the area.
